SAB Miller Scholars Programme – Responsible Alcohol Retailing – FREE Training
It’s that time of year again when I have funding from the brewer, SAB Miller in conjunction with the BIIAB to deliver FREE training for front line staff who sell alcohol in the Greater Manchester area. SAB Miller brands include Peroni, Miller Genuine Draft, Grolsch and Tyskie to name a few, and first launched the Scholars Programme in 2009, demonstrating their commitment to encourage responsible alcohol retailing throughout the UK.
The training is approx. 4.5 hours and is accredited by the BIIAB. This Level 1 Award in Responsible Alcohol Retailing, is aimed at promoting responsible alcohol retailing with staff who work in shops, bars, restaurants and clubs etc. Licensees must ensure their staff are suitably trained and that they are aware of their responsibilities associated with the sale of alcohol. This training will help them to carry out this duty, and helps to form part of due diligence.
A summary of the training is as follows:
Summary – This qualification enables candidates to understand the main points of licensing law. Recognize the responsibilities associated with the retail sale of alcohol and understand their duties concerning under-age sales and serving persons who are drunk. Support the designated premises supervisor to retail alcohol responsibly on their licensed premises. On completion of the training, delegates sit a short multiple choice exam and once passed, they receive a Nationally recognized certificate from the BIIAB.
I have run the same programme in the Greater Manchester area since 2009, with some great feedback from the learners.
The rules for this year’s training are as follows:
- Learners must be recruited from the following areas; tenanted/leased pubs, bars and other types of licensed outlets including franchised off-licensed operators. This programme is not available to staff from managed companies.
- Learners must be 18 years or older and must have been employed within the licensed retail sector for a minimum of 6 months (and not be Personal Licence Holders).
- Learners must work in businesses located in Greater Manchester.
Also as part of the programme outstanding learners will be identified during training and may be invited to a high profile award ceremony at the House of Commons later in the year.
